Technology is opening up new ways for people living with sight loss to remain independent, with AI-powered smart glasses now providing practical assistance with everyday tasks.
Lorraine Virco, from Preston in Lancashire, lives with optic nerve atrophy, a condition that has gradually affected her sight. She normally relies on her guide dog, Gigi, to help her get around safely, including navigating busy town centres, finding crossing points and travelling on public transport.
However, extremely hot weather can make using a guide dog more difficult. Guide Dogs advises that dogs should not be worked or trained when temperatures reach 24°C because of the increased risk of heatstroke.
During warmer weather, Lorraine has found another way of maintaining some of her independence: AI-enabled smart glasses.
How can AI smart glasses help?
Although they look similar to ordinary glasses, the technology incorporates cameras, audio and artificial intelligence to help the wearer understand and navigate their surroundings.
Lorraine can use the glasses to identify where she is, receive information about what is around her and get help with everyday activities. Technology can also assist with reading written information such as letters, appointment details and public transport timetables.
Visual assistance services such as Be My Eyes can provide further support by connecting blind and visually impaired people with volunteers and AI-powered assistance.
While Lorraine says technology cannot replace the companionship and practical support provided by Gigi, it gives her another option when circumstances make it safer for her guide dog to remain at home.
