Round The Island

The Round the Island Race

Sails, Spirit, and Seaside Stories: The Round the Island Race – A Jewel of the Isle of Wight

Every year, something extraordinary happens on the waters surrounding our island home. At the break of dawn, the horizon fills with sails—hundreds of them—catching the wind and gliding in synchrony. It’s not just a race. It’s the Round the Island Race, a breathtaking celebration of nautical heritage, local pride, and community spirit.

Organized by Round the Island it starts from Cowes to The Needles, and onward around the entire coast of the Isle of Wight, over 1,000 yachts compete in one of the largest yacht races in the world. But for us at Bluebird Care Isle of Wight, it's more than a spectacle—it’s a reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity that define our island life.

A Race with Deep Roots

First held in 1931 with just 25 boats, the Round the Island Race has grown into a global event that still feels wonderfully local. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or watching from the beach with a flask of tea, there's an unmistakable magic in the air.

Locals line the cliffs and harbours, cheering for passing boats, sharing stories, and rekindling friendships. It’s a day that brings everyone together—something we at Bluebird Care Isle of Wight deeply value in the care we provide.

We sat with my mum on the Esplanade to watch the sails go by. She used to race herself in the '70s, and she lit up telling the carers all about it - Isabel B., daughter of one of our wonderful clients

Care That Celebrates Local Life

Much like this great race, our work is about navigation—through life’s changes, challenges, and celebrations. We care for individuals and families across the Isle of Wight with warmth, dignity, and a deep respect for the stories each person carries. Events like Round the Island are more than dates on the calendar—they’re moments we share and memories we make together.

This weekend, our carers will be taking clients to seaside spots to watch the sails and enjoy a cup of tea. Others will enjoy the race from indoors, watching live updates and hearing old sailing tales brought to life. We encourage families to join in—these shared experiences can be powerfully uplifting, especially for clients living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
