Celebrating Nutrition and Hydration Week at Bluebird Care Isle of Wight

Every year in March, health and care organisations across the UK take part in Nutrition and Hydration Week — a dedicated time to shine a spotlight on something that’s fundamental to our health but often overlooked: what we eat and drink.

At Bluebird Care Isle of Wight, we know that good nutrition and staying well hydrated are key parts of supporting independence, strength and overall wellbeing for the people we care for. Whether someone is living with long-term health conditions, facing challenges with appetite, or simply needs encouragement with daily meals and drinks — our team is here to help make those moments pleasant, nourishing and meaningful.

Why Nutrition and Hydration Matter

Good food and drink fuel both the body and the mind. Eating well helps prevent long-term health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and low energy, while dehydration can lead to dizziness, confusion and other avoidable health problems — particularly in older adults.

Our carers are trained to recognise the signs of malnutrition and dehydration, and support people in ways that respect personal preferences and cultural dietary needs. We can:

• Help plan and prepare nutritious, enjoyable meals
• Encourage regular fluid intake throughout the day
• Support with shopping, menu planning and meal preparation
• Monitor changes in appetite and liaise with families or healthcare professionals where needed

Our senior carers assistant shares:

“Mealtimes are about more than just food. They’re about routine, comfort and conversation. We take time to understand what each person enjoys so we can make those moments meaningful.”

Our Registering Manager adds:

"Nutrition and hydration are essential to wellbeing — especially for people living with frailty or long-term conditions here on the Isle of Wight. During Nutrition and Hydration Week, we’re reminding families and our local community how the little things we do each day — like offering a favourite snack or a refreshing drink — really do make a difference."

How You Can Support Nutrition and Hydration at Home

• Offer favourite drinks regularly — even small amounts throughout the day add up.
• Make meals colourful and appealing — eating the rainbow can be both nutritious and enjoyable.
• Include social moments around food — a shared cup of tea and conversation can boost appetite and mood.
• Try smaller, more frequent meals if large portions feel overwhelming.

Simple habits like these support overall health and make daily routines more enjoyable.
