Congratulations to Josie Shurmer and Lynn Bowell who have recently received their Foundation Certificates in Dementia Awareness after attending a six week in-house training course in September.

As well as covering the basic facts about dementia, and how damage in the brain affects functional skills, the training focussed on a person-centred approach to caring for people with dementia. It also showed the value of individual life history in supporting a customer with dementia and how to overcome barriers to communicate effectively with them.

Josie Shurmer, Care Assistant at Bluebird Care Herefordshire commented:

I really enjoyed the course and it has helped me to become a more supportive care assistant as many of my customers have dementia.”
Lynn Bowell, Coordinator at Bluebird Care Herefordshire added:

Although I am now based in the office, I get involved at the assessment stage of creating a customer’s care plan. This training has helped me to understand how best we at Bluebird Care Herefordshire can support customers with dementia and their families from the outset.”
Owner of Bluebird Care Herefordshire, Hazel Godsall said:

I am really keen to ensure that all our staff take the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge around dementia. As a Dementia Champion myself, I want my staff to be as well-equipped as possible to offer the highest standard of care to our customers with dementia so that they can maintain their independence and dignity. “
The next training course will commence next week with four more care assistants preparing for the Foundation Certificate.
