This May Bluebird Care Hammersmith & Fulham is supporting the Stroke Association’s annual stroke awareness month, Make May Purple.

The Stroke Association is the UK’s leading stroke charity who strongly believe strokes can and should be prevented, however this health challenge does not receive the attention or funding it requires. The organisation works directly with stroke survivors and their families, health and social care professionals and scientists and researchers.

A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, this causes that area of the brain to shut down and brain cells begin to die. This can result in brain injury, disability and in some cases death.

The main stroke symptoms can be remembered using the word FAST:

  • Face – one side of the face is drooping
  • Arms – arm weakness and numbness
  • Speech – speech and understanding difficulties
  • Time – time to call 999 immediately

Soheila Amin, Director of Bluebird Care Hammersmith & Fulham, said:

“A stroke can happen in an instant, but the damage can last a lifetime, making it so important to promote the Stroke Association. The Association provides vital support and research to survivors and their families.

If you are a stroke survivor, this also means that you could be more susceptible of getting complications such as pneumonia if you contract coronavirus. It is very important to follow the NHS’s guidelines regarding coronavirus and to stay at home.

However, if you have coronavirus and you start developing stroke symptoms, you should still call 999 immediately.
