Rebuilding Confidence at Home After a Stroke: Graham's Story
After experiencing a stroke and later a serious fall, everyday activities became more difficult for Graham. With personalised support from Bluebird Care Gravesham & Dartford, he now has help with his daily routine while continuing to do more for himself at home.
Returning home after a stroke and a serious fall
Following his stroke, Graham faced a number of challenges with everyday life. He later fell out of bed and was admitted to hospital with broken ribs, adding to the difficulties he was already experiencing.
Getting in and out of bed and his armchair had become difficult, as had showering. Graham was feeling low, frustrated and worried, with concerns about falling and hurting himself again.
Having the right support at home became important not only for Graham, but also for his family.
Help with everyday life
Bluebird Care supports Graham twice a day with areas of his routine that have become more difficult.
His Care Experts help him move between his bed and wheelchair using a Sara Stedy, as well as supporting him with going to bed, personal care and housework.
For Graham, having people around who listen and understand has made a real difference.
Someone listened and understood.
Knowing that support is coming each day also provides consistency within his routine.
Becoming more independent
While Graham receives help with certain activities, maintaining his independence remains an important part of his care.
With support, he is able to have a shower and says that he can now wash himself independently. He has also become more confident with certain everyday activities.
This balance means Graham can receive assistance where he needs it without taking away the things he is able to do for himself.
A friendly face twice a day
The social side of Graham's care matters too.
He enjoys being able to talk to his Care Experts and particularly values having someone to speak to during their visits.
As Graham says:
It's wonderful to have a conversation.
Even on a bad day, seeing a friendly face in the evening can help make his day a little brighter.
Reassurance for Graham and his family
Having regular support means Graham knows someone will be visiting twice a day, while his family has the reassurance of knowing that he is being supported at home.
Graham says he feels more confident with certain things and is comfortable asking his Care Experts for help with tasks when he needs it.
When asked whether he would recommend Bluebird Care, Graham's answer was simple:
