Grant's Story

Staying Independent at Home With the Right Support: Grant's Story

After initially welcoming Bluebird Care into his home to support his mum, Grant continued receiving care himself. Today, personalised support helps him manage everyday tasks, maintain his independence and continue enjoying life at home with his dog, JJ.

Continuing support at home

Grant first got to know Bluebird Care when his mum needed support at home. Caring for her on his own had been difficult, and the family arranged additional help.

After Grant lost his mum, his family chose to continue his support so that he could carry on living independently at home with JJ.

Having already become familiar with Bluebird Care through the support provided to his mum, Grant was happy for the team to continue visiting and helping him with his own everyday routine.

Help with everyday life

Grant receives support with some of the daily tasks he finds more difficult.

His Care Experts help with cooking and washing, as well as providing reminders around things such as taking his medication, cleaning his teeth and showering.

This support is personalised around Grant and the areas where he needs a helping hand, while encouraging him to continue doing things for himself.

Staying independent

Maintaining Grant's independence is an important part of his care.

He continues to take an active role in everyday life, including loading the dishwasher, showering independently and taking JJ out for walks.

Rather than simply doing everything for him, Grant's Care Experts have helped him with certain jobs so that he can continue doing more himself.

Grant says his food is better and that his life has become more organised.

Growing in confidence

Over time, Grant has become more confident around his Care Experts and more comfortable asking for help when he needs it.

He enjoys seeing different members of the team, going shopping and having support with the things that make everyday life easier.

The relationships he has developed with his Care Experts are an important part of his experience too.

As Grant puts it:

Carers make me laugh.

And JJ is very much part of the relationship as well:

Carers love JJ my dog.

More than everyday tasks

For Grant, care isn't only about practical support.

His Care Experts have become part of familiar moments at home too, including helping him put up his Christmas decorations.

These everyday interactions help make Grant's care personal to him, his routines and the life he wants to continue living.

His family also has the reassurance of knowing that Grant is being supported, helping reduce some of the worry about how he is managing at home.

Could the right support help you stay independent at home?

Needing some help with everyday tasks doesn't necessarily mean giving up your independence.

If you or someone you love could benefit from additional support at home, our Gravesham & Dartford team can take the time to understand your routines, preferences and the things you would like to continue doing for yourself.

Together, we can explore personalised care that provides a helping hand where it's needed while supporting you to continue living life your way.
