Daphne's Story

How companionship and kindness helped Daphne regain confidence and look towards the future

Sometimes, the greatest difference comes from having someone to share your day with.

After losing her husband and giving up the family car, Daphne found herself becoming increasingly isolated. With no close family living nearby and Parkinson's making everyday tasks more difficult, simple things like shopping, visiting the Post Office and even opening jars became a challenge.

More than anything, Daphne missed having someone to talk to.

"It was halfway through the summer and I hadn't seen a soul for about three months. I thought, 'How on earth am I going to cope through the winter?'"

When Daphne was introduced to Bluebird Care, our focus wasn't just on helping with practical tasks. It was about helping her reconnect with her community and enjoy everyday life again.

Her care professionals began supporting her with shopping trips, Post Office visits, getting out and about, companionship and conversation, as well as practical help around the home. These regular visits soon became much more than support—they became friendships built on trust.

"My first carers were Victoria and Suzanne – they took me shopping and helped with my Post Office parcel runs."

As time went on, Daphne's confidence grew. Having familiar faces visit regularly helped reduce loneliness and gave her something to look forward to each day. Knowing she has people she trusts by her side has given her reassurance as her needs continue to change.

Today, Daphne enjoys twice-daily visits from care professionals who know her well and understand what's important to her. Those relationships have helped her feel connected, supported and confident about the future.

"She always goes one step further."

For Daphne, companionship has meant more than practical support. It has brought confidence, connection and peace of mind.

"Knowing I have company and a carer coming twice a day is something I look forward to. Knowing I've built relationships with these girls means I'll feel comfortable when the time comes."

At Bluebird Care Folkestone & Dover, we believe companionship is about helping people stay connected, continue enjoying the things they love and live comfortably in the place they know best—their own home.
