Top 5 Ways to Make Your Home Dementia Friendly

Published: 16/09/2021

At Bluebird Care, we are proud to be able to offer a team of Care Assistants who are trained through the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative and can offer specialised dementia support.

If you have Dementia or you are caring for someone with Dementia, living at home can help you and your loved one feel safe and stay independent. With small changes and support from your Bluebird Care Assistants you can stay safe, active and continue to enjoy your home.

We’ve put together top 5 tips for making your home dementia friendly.

Good Lighting
Not just natural light getting into the house but additional lighting with help you see clearly and help make sense of where you are.

Safe Floor Area
Remove anything that could make you trip – rugs, mats, cables. Dementia may affect how you see colours so bright and contrasting colours may help you see your furniture from the flooring (although stripes and bold patterns may be confusing!).

Eating and Drinking
Eating and drinking well is very important to your health. Use plates and cups with contrasting colours to your food. You could also use clear plastic containers to store food, so you can see what’s inside.

Memory Issues
Place pictures or signs on cupboards and drawers so you know what is inside. Try to keep your important things in the same place.

Keeping active and engaged.
A large-faced clock and a calendar can help you keep track of the day and time, and the different things you’re doing.
