With the school holidays coming to an end and family returning to their normal lives, sometimes the transition can be overwhelming and you may experience feelings of loneliness.

Loneliness is a huge problem in the modern world, as methods of communication change, it can often feel like you are being left behind.

However, there are some easy things you can do to stop these feelings, meet new people and maybe even try new things. The hardest part of anything in this list is taking the plunge but we hope this simple list will encourage you to make new connections.

You have to start somewhere

  1. Join Social Groups or Clubs
    Engage in activities such as book clubs, gardening groups, or hobby classes to meet people with similar interests. Communities will often post group information on local information boards.

  2. Volunteer
    Giving time to a cause you care about can provide a sense of purpose and the opportunity to meet others. Explore local hospitals, food banks and initiatives to help your local community.

  3. Take Up a New Hobby
    Learning something new, like painting, knitting, or playing an instrument, can be both fulfilling and a way to connect with like-minded individuals. Remember, it’s never too late to learn something new!

  4. Exercise Regularly
    Participating in group exercises, such as yoga, tai chi, or walking clubs, can improve physical health and provide social interaction.

  5. Attend Community Events
    Local libraries, community centres, and religious institutions often host events and activities that are great for meeting new people.

  6. Connect Online
    Use social media or platforms like Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, or join online communities focused on your interests. If you aren’t sure how to use these tools, reach out to family and friends to ask. Learning this new skill can also be a great excuse to spend time with people.

  7. Get a Pet
    A pet can provide companionship and routine. Dogs, in particular, can also encourage physical activity and social interaction during walks. If you require a Care Assistant, they can help you take care of your fluffy companion!

  8. Participate in Educational Programs
    Many universities offer courses, both in-person and online, where you can learn new things and meet new people. The diversity of ages can be great for keeping current and finding new ways to engage.

  9. Travel or Take Day Trips
    Explore new places, even if just locally. Travelling with a group or going on organised tours can introduce you to new people and experiences.

  10. Create your own club
    If you can’t find a group within your local area that grabs your interest, why not start your own club? You can post a timetable online or on local message boards and find people with similar interests.
