Choosing a home care provider for yourself or a loved one is an important decision. You want to feel confident that the person receiving care will be treated with dignity, respect and compassion, while receiving support that meets their individual needs.

When researching care providers, two useful things to look at are their Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating and customer reviews. Both can help you understand more about a care provider, but they offer different insights.

So, what is the difference between a CQC rating and customer reviews, and how can you use both when choosing home care?

What is a CQC Rating?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care services in England. It assesses and monitors services to help ensure they meet the required standards of quality and safety.

CQC ratings help people understand how a regulated care service performs against the regulator’s assessment framework.

The CQC assesses services across key areas, including whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

What Do Customer Reviews Tell You?

Customer reviews offer a different perspective. They may describe the experiences of people receiving care and their family members, helping you understand what day-to-day support can feel like.

Reading reviews can help you identify themes in people’s experiences and prepare useful questions to ask a provider.

CQC Ratings vs Customer Reviews: What Is the Difference?

Although both can be useful when researching home care, they serve different purposes.

A CQC rating provides a regulatory assessment. It reflects the regulator's findings about a service against its assessment framework at the time of assessment.

Customer reviews describe individual experiences. They can offer insight into communication, relationships with care workers and people's experiences of everyday support.

Neither tells you everything you need to know on its own. A rating does not guarantee that every person's experience will be the same, and a collection of positive reviews does not replace an independent regulatory assessment.

Looking at both, alongside conversations with the care provider, can help you make a more informed decision.

Why Quality and Compassion Matter in Home Care

Choosing home care involves more than checking a rating or reading reviews. It is also about finding support that respects the person's independence, preferences and dignity.

For some people, this might mean receiving help with personal care and everyday routines. For others, it could involve companionship, support with preparing meals or assistance with maintaining their usual activities.

The right support will depend on the individual's circumstances, and these should be discussed with the care provider before arrangements are made.
