Respite Care in Great Yarmouth & Lowestoft

What Is Respite Care?

If you care for an elderly parent, spouse, or loved one at home, you will know how relentless it can be. Caring is one of the most loving things a person can do - and one of the most exhausting. Without a proper break, even the most dedicated family carer risks becoming overwhelmed, unwell, or burnt out.

Respite care gives you that break.

Respite care means a professional carer from Bluebird Care steps in to look after your loved one - for a few days, a week, a fortnight, or longer - while you take the time you need to rest, recover, travel, or simply breathe. When you return, your loved one has been cared for to the same standard you would provide yourself.

It is not a failure to ask for help. It is a sign that you understand your own needs as well as those of the person you care for.

Respite Care Services We Offer

Visiting Respite Care A professional carer visits your loved one at home for scheduled visits - 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or an hour at a time. This can cover mornings, evenings, mealtimes, medication, personal care, and companionship while you take time for yourself during the day or attend appointments.

Live-in Respite Care A dedicated carer moves into your loved one's home for the duration of your absence, providing round-the-clock support. Ideal for family carers taking a holiday or dealing with their own health matters. Your loved one remains at home in familiar surroundings with consistent, professional care.

Emergency and Short Notice Respite Sometimes respite is needed urgently - your own health deteriorates, a family emergency arises, or you simply reach the point where you need help immediately. We do everything we can to arrange emergency respite at short notice. Please call us as soon as you need us.

Post-Hospital Discharge Respite When a loved one returns home from hospital following a fall, stroke, operation, or illness, they often need more intensive support than usual during recovery. We can provide a short-term respite care package - a week, a fortnight, or longer - that gives them the support they need while they regain their strength.

Our respite care is available on a weekly basis, priced according to the level of support required.

Who Is Respite Care For?

Family carers who need a break If you are the primary carer for an elderly relative and have not had a proper rest in months - or years - respite care is for you. Every family carer deserves time to rest and recover. Taking a break is not selfish. It is essential.

Families planning a holiday Going on holiday when you are a family carer can feel impossible. Live-in respite care means you can travel knowing your loved one is safe, supported, and comfortable at home - cared for by a professional who is there around the clock.

People recovering from hospital stays  Following a stroke, a fall, a hip replacement, or any significant admission, the first weeks at home are often the most challenging. Respite care provides intensive support during recovery, reducing the risk of readmission and helping your loved one regain confidence and independence.

Family carers dealing with their own health If you are unwell yourself - or need an operation, treatment, or hospitalisation - respite care ensures your loved one is not left without support while you focus on your own recovery.

Families new to care Sometimes families use respite care as a way of exploring whether home care is right for their loved one before committing to a regular arrangement. A two-week respite placement can be a valuable way to assess how your loved one responds to professional care at home.

Respite Care vs Residential Respite

When families think about respite care, they sometimes think automatically of a care home - booking a short-term placement for their loved one while they take a break. This is one option, but it is not the only one, and for many people it is not the right one.

Residential respite means your loved one leaves their home, moves into an unfamiliar environment, adapts to different routines and unfamiliar people - and then makes that adjustment again when they return home. For people living with dementia or anxiety, this disruption can be significant and distressing.

Home-based respite care means your loved one stays exactly where they are - in their own home, in their own bed, surrounded by their own belongings and the familiar rhythms of their daily life. A professional carer comes to them. Nothing changes except that you are temporarily absent.

For most people, and particularly for those living with dementia, home-based respite is a far less disruptive and more comfortable experience.

Respite Care for Dementia

Arranging respite care when your loved one has dementia requires particular care and sensitivity. The disruption of moving to an unfamiliar environment can be genuinely distressing for someone with dementia and can trigger significant confusion, anxiety, and distress.

Home-based respite care - where a professional carer comes to your loved one rather than your loved one going somewhere unfamiliar - is in most cases the most appropriate form of respite for people living with dementia.

Our carers who provide respite care for people with dementia receive specialist training. Where possible, we introduce the carer to your loved one in advance of the respite period, so that when you leave they are already a familiar and trusted face. We also take a detailed brief from you about your loved one's routines, preferences, triggers, and history - so that care during your absence follows the patterns your loved one is used to.

Planning Your Respite Care

The more notice you can give us, the better we can plan. For a planned holiday or absence, we recommend contacting us at least two to four weeks in advance. This gives us time to:

  • Complete a free home assessment
  • Build a detailed care plan based on your loved one's specific needs and routines
  • Match you with the most appropriate carer or care team
  • Introduce the carer to your loved one before you leave, where possible

For urgent or emergency respite, please call us as soon as you know you need help. We will always do everything we can to respond quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions - Respite Care

Is there a minimum period for respite care? No. We do not have a minimum booking period. Whether you need cover for a long weekend, a fortnight's holiday, or a longer period, we will build an arrangement that fits your needs.

How much notice do I need to give? As much as possible, ideally two to four weeks for a planned absence. For emergencies, please call us immediately and we will do everything we can to help at short notice.

Can my loved one stay at home during respite care? Yes - this is exactly what home-based respite care means. Your loved one remains in their own home throughout. A professional carer comes to them.

What happens if my loved one has a medical emergency while I am away? Our carers are trained to respond appropriately to medical situations and will contact emergency services immediately if needed. We will also contact you or your designated emergency contact. We carry out a thorough risk assessment as part of the care plan to ensure we are prepared.

Can respite care lead to ongoing regular care? Yes. Many families start with respite care and transition to a regular ongoing care arrangement as they see the benefit it brings. There is no obligation to continue after the respite period, but we are always here if you would like to.

Will my loved one have the same carer throughout the respite period? For live-in respite care, yes - one carer will be present throughout your absence. For visiting respite care, we aim for consistency and will use a small, familiar team wherever possible.
