Activities in Saltash

Sitting on the banks of the River Tamar and known as the "Gateway to Cornwall", Saltash combines beautiful waterside scenery, fascinating local heritage and a strong community spirit. From gentle accessible walks and historic landmarks to social groups, markets and leisure activities, there are plenty of ways to get out, meet people and enjoy the local area.

At Bluebird Care Cornwall North, we believe staying connected with your community can play an important part in maintaining independence and wellbeing. Whether that means enjoying a walk by the river, attending a regular social group or simply meeting a friend for coffee, Saltash has plenty to explore.

Enjoy Saltash Waterside and the Tamar

Saltash Waterside is one of the town's most distinctive places to spend a relaxing afternoon. Sitting beside the River Tamar, the area offers views across the water and towards Saltash's two famous bridges.

The waterfront is also home to Ashtorre Rock, a community venue overlooking the Tamar. The waterside makes a lovely destination for anyone who simply wants to enjoy some fresh air, watch the boats or take in the views without planning a strenuous day out.

Above the river stands The Royal Albert Bridge, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's famous railway bridge linking Cornwall and Devon. Saltash Town Council's visitor information also highlights the nearby Brunel statue and the large Union Mural, which depicts scenes from the town's history and community.

Take a Walk Through Saltash

There are several routes around Saltash for people who enjoy walking, ranging from short accessible paths to longer countryside walks.

One local route starts at the Guildhall before passing beneath the Tamar Road Bridge and continuing through Saltmill Park. The approximately 4 km route combines riverside views, woodland and bridleways.

For something shorter and more accessible, Churchtown Farm is particularly worth exploring. The nature reserve has three highlighted routes, including the 460-metre Lynher View Walk, which Saltash Town Council identifies as wheelchair accessible and which offers views over the Lynher Estuary. There is also the easy 1.1 km Sparrowhawk Trail and the longer 2.7 km Curlew Walk.

This variety makes it easier to choose an outing based on someone's mobility, confidence and how far they would like to walk.

Discover Saltash's History

Saltash has centuries of history to uncover, particularly around its relationship with the River Tamar and its position as an important gateway into Cornwall.

A visit to Saltash Heritage on Lower Fore Street is a great starting point for anyone interested in discovering more about the town and the people who have shaped it.

A walk around the town centre and waterside also provides opportunities to discover historic buildings, the bridges and landmarks associated with Saltash's maritime and railway heritage. Saltash Town Council provides information about local points of interest for those who would like to explore further.

Explore Cotehele

A trip slightly further afield can take you to National Trust - Cotehele, a historic estate on the banks of the River Tamar.

With its house, gardens, estate and beautiful Tamar Valley surroundings, Cotehele can make a wonderful day out for anyone interested in history, gardening or the countryside. It is also a good option when you want an outing that can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace rather than packing lots of activities into one day.

Stay Connected at Saltash Library Hub

The local library is about much more than borrowing books. The Library Hub is a community space offering free monthly events and activities.

Regular activities  include adult colouring sessions alongside other events throughout the week. The main library is largely on one floor, has a ramp at its entrance and disabled parking spaces immediately outside, helping make it accessible to more members of the community.

For someone looking to get out of the house regularly without travelling far, the Library Hub could be a great place to discover a new activity or simply spend some time around other people.

Keep Active at Saltash Leisure Centre

For those looking to stay physically active, Saltash Leisure Centre offers swimming, gym sessions and a range of fitness classes. Its programme includes both higher-energy activities and mind-and-body sessions, allowing people to choose something suited to their interests and abilities.

Staying active doesn't necessarily mean undertaking intense exercise. A gentle swim or suitable fitness class can provide an enjoyable reason to get out of the house while remaining part of the community.

Browse Saltash's Local Markets

Saltash's markets provide another opportunity to enjoy the town centre and support local traders. Saltash Town Council describes the markets as community-focused events held monthly during the summer, bringing activity into the heart of the town.

Combined with Saltash's independent shops and cafés, a market day can make for a simple and enjoyable outing without needing to travel far.

Enjoy the Tamar Valley

Saltash's location also makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Tamar Valley National Landscape. The surrounding countryside offers beautiful scenery, villages and opportunities for peaceful days out.

You don't always need a long walk to enjoy the countryside either. A scenic drive followed by lunch or a short stroll can be just as enjoyable, particularly for someone with reduced mobility.
