Bluebird Care Cherwell & North Bucks is supporting Rare Disease Day on Thursday 28th February. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of rare diseases, their impact on people’s lives and the need for further investment in medical research.

A rare disease is any disorder which affects a small minority of the population. These diseases have devastating effects on people and their families, with most rare diseases having no cures and can exist for years, undiagnosed.

This year’s theme is ‘Bridging Health and Social Care’ and focuses on bringing together medical and social services to help those living with a rare disease with the everyday challenges they face. Whilst the campaign aims to improve knowledge amongst the public; it also targets researchers, healthcare professionals, public authorities and policy makers to address the situations of those suffering from rare diseases.

Suzzanne Elgar, Director of Bluebird Care Cherwell & North Bucks, commented:

“We at Bluebird Care feel strongly about the need to recognise Rare Disease Day. It is important to raise awareness about rare diseases as 1 in 20 people will develop a rare disease at some point in their life.

We need to take a step towards understanding what rare diseases are and how we could help improve people’s lives.”
