Carers Week - Dementia Awareness Training

Published: 01/06/2021

In support of Carers Week, we are delighted to be  able to offer a free online course to assist unpaid carers in supporting a loved one living with Dementia.

This two-hour online session will be hosted by Donna Jones, our Dementia Lead for Gloucestershire. Donna supports Carers and Customers in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Cirencester, and can often be seen out and about in the community at events and seminars.

Donna has extensive experience in overseeing dementia care in Gloucestershire, and holds multiple qualifications including Dementia Lead and Dementia Awareness Train the Trainer. She played an integral part in creating the Community Dementia Link award syllabus, which is taught throughout the county by the Gloucestershire Dementia Education Strategy (NHS)

Donna has led many successful dementia training courses, and prefers a light and conversational approach to make the subject fun and accessible.

Over the two-hour event we will explore the different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease or Dementia with Lewy Bodies, and how the symptoms of these types of dementia may affect the experiences of the person who is living with them. We will then move on to discuss how a person supporting someone with dementia can tailor their care delivery to suit the needs of that person. Later on, Donna will look at the subject of “Challenging Behaviour,” and how this may often be a way for someone to try and express an unmet need.

The end of the session will be a 30-minute Q&A, where participants will be encouraged to share their experiences, and we will be able to offer practical advice and signposting to further support.
