Getting Extra Help

Getting Extra Help When Caring for Your Husband at Home

After caring for her husband herself for several years, one Canterbury & Thanet customer reached a point where managing his increasing care and mobility needs alone was becoming too difficult. With support from Bluebird Care Canterbury & Thanet, she now has professional help with her husband's personal care and mobility while remaining an important part of his care at home.

When caring for your husband becomes difficult to manage alone

As someone's needs change, the support required from their husband, wife or partner can increase too.

For this customer, years of being her husband's main carer eventually reached a point where she needed additional help.

She explained:

I am his main carer and have been for years, but it got to a point I was struggling to do it on my own.

Getting professional support didn't mean stepping away from caring for her husband. Instead, additional care could work alongside the support she was already providing.

Personal care and mobility support at home

Her husband needs help with several aspects of his daily routine and mobility.

She said:

The Bluebird carers help my husband with washing, shaving, dressing and his mobility with a hoist.

Having Care Experts provide this support has helped with some of the tasks that had become increasingly difficult for the couple to manage themselves.

As someone's mobility or care requirements change, having the right support in place can help them continue receiving care in their own home.

Building trusted relationships with Care Experts

Receiving regular personal care means feeling comfortable with the people coming into your home can be particularly important.

After ten months of receiving support, the couple had developed positive relationships with their Care Experts.

She described them as:

Professional, reliable.

Both she and her husband had also formed good connections with the people providing his care.

Knowing additional help is there when you need it

For this family, support isn't limited to the Care Experts visiting their home.

Having a local Canterbury & Thanet team available when additional help is needed has also provided reassurance.

She explained:

Communication with the office is tremendous. I know if I need extra help with any problem I can pick the phone up and know they will be there.

For someone who remains their partner's main carer, knowing there are other people available to turn to can help make caring at home feel more manageable.

Looking back at their first ten months with Bluebird Care, she described the support as:

A godsend.

She also added:

I highly recommend Bluebird Care.

Her experience demonstrates how professional care can work alongside the support already provided by a husband, wife or other family member rather than replacing their role altogether.
