Carol's Story
From Apprehensive to Relaxed With Home Care
When Carol first started receiving home care in Canterbury & Thanet, she admits she felt apprehensive about having Care Experts coming into her home. Living alone and being used to managing independently, accepting additional help was a significant change. After getting to know her regular Care Experts, Carol's experience changed. Their practical support now makes everyday tasks less tiring, while familiar, friendly faces have helped her feel relaxed about receiving care at home.
Feeling apprehensive about starting home care
It's understandable to feel uncertain about having care at home for the first time, particularly when you're accustomed to managing everyday life independently.
That was Carol's experience.
She explained:
I live alone and was very apprehensive at first having carers, but now I am so relaxed with them.
Getting to know the people providing her support has helped Carol become more comfortable with having care as part of her everyday routine.
Making everyday tasks less tiring
Carol lives with COPD and explained that completing everyday tasks herself could leave her feeling out of breath.
Things that may appear relatively straightforward could take a significant amount of her morning and require considerable effort.
Carol said:
The carers have took lots of work load off me, if I was doing it myself I would get so out of breath with my COPD and it would take me all morning. The carers do it in half an hour.
Having additional help means Carol doesn't have to spend as much of her time and energy trying to manage everything by herself.
Regular Care Experts and friendly faces
Consistency has also been an important part of Carol's experience.
Rather than every visit feeling unfamiliar, she receives support from regular Care Experts and has been able to build relationships with the people coming into her home.
Carol said:
I have regular carers and they are chatty, very friendly and come with a smile.
For someone living alone, these visits can provide practical help alongside friendly conversation and a familiar face.
Getting help without giving up your independence
Needing some additional support at home doesn't necessarily mean losing your independence.
For Carol, having Care Experts take some of the workload away means she doesn't have to use as much time and energy on tasks that have become more difficult.
Her experience also demonstrates how initial uncertainty about receiving care can change as you get to know the people supporting you.
Regular Care Experts, familiar faces and support shaped around what you need can help care become a more comfortable part of everyday life.
