Dementia Awareness Talk

Dementia Awareness Talk at Christ Church

Dementia Awareness Talk at Christ Church: Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge & Warminster

A powerful dementia awareness talk at Christ Church, led by our Training Manager, Carla, gave us a valuable opportunity to learn more about dementia, hear real experiences and explore how small changes in the way we communicate can make a big difference.

Communicating with space, sight and sound

Carla highlighted the importance of space, sight and sound when communicating with someone living with dementia, and shared some eye-opening facts:

  • 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 will develop dementia
  • There are currently 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK

One of the most powerful messages from the session was that dementia is "not something to fear, they are still in there." By understanding the condition and adapting how we communicate, we can help people living with dementia feel valued, respected and connected.

I enjoyed the training session and couldn't help thinking it was one of the best introductory talks I've heard for a long time.

Hearing from Tsungayi

We were also incredibly fortunate to hear from Tsungayi, who shared her first-hand experiences of supporting someone living with dementia. Her insight reminded us that "reassurance is more important than correction", a simple but profound lesson that can make all the difference in someone's day.

Tsungayi also left us with these words:

Every person wants the same things we all want: to be welcomed, to be respected, to belong, to be loved, and most of all, to be included.

- Tsungayi

Dementia Talk at St Christ Church

It was delivered with real understanding and compassion, equipping us all to approach people with dementia and their carers with the same sensitivity.

Building a dementia-friendly community

Together, we can build a more understanding, supportive and dementia-friendly community, one where people living with dementia and the people who care for them feel welcome, included and understood.

It spoke simply and practically to the issues facing people living with dementia who come to church
