Staying at Home, Staying Connected: Helen’s Story

Insight

For many people, home is much more than a place to live. It is where familiar routines, treasured memories and important relationships are built. Staying at home can mean holding on to independence, familiarity and connection.

Helen knows this feeling well. When declining mobility made everyday life more challenging, she worried that residential care might be her only option. Determined to stay in the home she loves, she wanted to continue living life on her own terms.

Since February 2023, support from Bluebird Care Bournemouth & Poole has helped Helen stay safe at home, maintain her independence and reconnect with the church community that means so much to her.

This is Helen’s story.

Facing the possibility of leaving home

Before her mobility changed, Helen enjoyed a busy and independent life. She drove, gardened, played the piano and was actively involved in her local church community.

As her mobility declined, everyday tasks became harder and she increasingly needed support to move around safely. She began to worry that she might have to leave her home and move into residential care.

What I didn’t want to do was go into a home. I didn’t want to give up my own home, which I like.

Discovering an alternative

A neighbour noticed that Helen was struggling and suggested she contact Bluebird Care Bournemouth & Poole.

Until then, Helen had not realised that professional care could be provided in her own home. Her neighbour made the initial call, and Helen began receiving support in February 2023.

Her care focuses on helping her live safely and comfortably at home. This includes support with daily routines, transfers, wheelchair use, practical household tasks and refreshments.

Professional care that puts safety first

For Helen, one of the most important aspects of her care is the combination of kindness and professional training.

She values being listened to and remaining in control of her choices, while knowing her carers will use their judgement if something could put her at risk.

They come to me as trained carers who are also kind and well-meaning. But the training comes first.

Helen says her carers support her choices wherever possible within safe practice. If something is unsafe or unwise, they explain why and help her find a safer approach.

This gives her confidence that decisions are being made with her wellbeing in mind.

We work hard to recruit people who genuinely care. Training can teach many different skills, but the caring side is essential. It has to come naturally.

Care that feels personal

Over time, Helen’s care team has got to know her routines and preferences. They understand what matters to her, from the practical parts of her daily routine to making the cup of tea she enjoys.

That familiarity helps visits feel natural and reassuring.

The relationships have also grown beyond practical support. Helen enjoys the conversation and humour she shares with her carers and appreciates how the team works together.

They started as carers, but they’ve become my friends.

Reconnecting with a valued community

Church has always played an important role in Helen’s life. She was an active member of her congregation and contributed to church life.

When her mobility prevented her from attending, she lost more than the opportunity to attend services. She also lost regular contact with friends, responsibilities and an important part of her identity.

With support for transfers, wheelchair access and transport, Helen has been able to return to church.

Knowing that support can be arranged for important services and occasions has helped her reconnect with a community that means so much to her.

It’s enormously important to me.

The difference home care has made

For Helen, receiving care at home has made a real difference to her independence and quality of life.

  • She has remained in the home she values rather than moving into residential care.
  • She feels safer knowing trained carers can identify risks and follow safe procedures.
  • Her routines and preferences are understood, supporting her choice, dignity and independence.
  • She benefits from regular companionship and trusted relationships.
  • She has been able to return to important church occasions and reconnect with her community.

Helen describes the arrangement as “a tremendous success”.

For anyone considering home care, she recommends thinking carefully about the support needed and looking closely at the training and character of the people providing it.

Not only are the carers pleasant and nice, but they are trained, and that is the clue: the training.

Her experience also highlights something that cannot be taught through a manual alone. Training provides the skills and knowledge needed to deliver safe care, while genuine compassion shapes how those skills are put into practice.

As Helen puts it:

You spot the carers when you choose them and then you train them. But you can’t put caring into them.

Helping people stay connected to the life they love

Helen’s story shows that home care can be about much more than help with everyday tasks.

The right support has enabled her to remain in the home she loves, continue making her own choices and maintain relationships that are important to her. It has also helped her reconnect with a community that has been a significant part of her life.

At Bluebird Care Bournemouth & Poole, we understand that everyone has their own routines, preferences and things that matter to them. Our aim is to provide personalised care that supports people to remain safe and independent at home, while continuing to live the life that is important to them.

For Helen, that has meant staying at home and staying connected.
