Age is Just a Number: 72-Year-Old Care Assistant Joins Birmingham Home Care Provider

Bluebird Care Birmingham East & North have recently welcomed Laura Betts, a 72-year-old Care Assistant, to their team.

Last 4-and-a-half years, Laura says that she found herself without much to do and spent her time watching TV, shopping and “wasting money”.

Following a 22-year career in the NHS Good hope Hospital in Birmingham, Laura knew that her expertise and value lay in caring for those in need and making use of her personable skills on a daily basis.

As friends and other people her own age enjoy retirement, Laura threw herself in to a recruitment and interview process with three social care agencies – earning three different job offers. Laura’s mind was made up to join Bluebird Care Birmingham East & North following a review of appraisals and customer feedback online.

Having joined in December 2021, Laura is enjoying life as a fully-fledged Care Assistant, responsible for multiple customers across the city. She says it is the best job she has ever had.

“The best memory I have is getting the position itself! Once I was told I got the job, that was it for me.” Laura said.

“I have got some lovely clients. You don’t know what you’re going in to and they do not know what is coming into their home. It is up to me to build a rapport and trust, but once you do, they are an absolute pleasure to care for.”

On why she returned to work, Laura explained: “I wasn’t doing anything with myself. I needed to get out and meet people again. When I joined Bluebird Care Birmingham East & North, I was immediately put at ease, and it was like I’d never left work”.

“It is a pleasure to be able to give wonderful people like Laura the opportunity to come back to work, for as little or as often as she likes, to help customers in our local community.

“Laura is very jolly, enjoys her work and always receives very good feedback from the customers she has been visiting. She has even completed her Care Certificate!

“Laura is an inspiration, and we hope her success encourages others in a similar position to consider a career in home care.  To find out more about vacancies at Bluebird Care Birmingham North & East, please visit: www.bluebirdcarecareers.co.uk/locations/birmingham-north
