Published: 06/01/2022

Bluebird Care Bristol, Bath, & NE Somerset a leading home care provider, has announced the introduction of their new moped initiative.

The scheme that will allow more people without access to a vehicle but who are interested in a career in domiciliary care to excel without transport limitations.Currently, on a trial basis, new and existing carers will have the opportunity to access their own Bluebird moped.

Bluebird Care Bristol, Bath & NE Somerset provides home and live-in care to a wide range of customers across the region living with dementia, physical disabilities, and many other acute and chronic conditions.

The current team of Care Assistants consists of drivers and walkers, both of which are essential to providing care to their customers. However, prior to the new scheme, those who walk could only work on a part-time basis due to being limited to a specific area. The moped scheme aims to provide walkers who want to work full-time with the opportunity to do so while also increasing the speed between customers.

This scheme is proving to be innovative to the Bristol, Bath & NE Somerset area, with Bluebird Care Bath currently being the only home care provider in the area, offering such a unique opportunity for existing members of their team and future ones.

Katie Dunn, a Care Assistant for Bluebird Care Bath, will be the first to trial the scheme in which she will have the opportunity to take home the 50cc Panther moped with the Bluebird Care branch, later reimbursing her for the travel between customer visits.

Speaking of the new initiative, Katie Dunn, a Care Assistant at the Bluebird Care Bath branch, said:

I used to travel to and from appointments on foot, which limited my workload. Bluebird Care Bath has been fully supportive by putting me through a compulsory basic training test, which will enable me to increase my hours to full time. They have now provided me with a moped on loan to travel to and from my customer's houses quicker, and I can even use it in my spare time!

Tim Rowland-Jones, Franchise Owner of Bluebird Care Bristol, Bath, & NE Somerset added:

“I am thrilled to be able to start trialling this new initiative for our staff. We want to provide our carers with easy access to a quicker and more efficient way of transport. New and existing customers will also benefit, with the mopeds reducing care assistants' travel time, therefore, increasing capacity and focusing on a more person-centred care approach. Katie, who is the first to trial the scheme, has been a dedicated and hardworking member of the team, and I am delighted to provide her with this opportunity”.

With the anticipated success of the scheme, Bluebird Care Bristol, Bath & NE Somerset is hopeful they will be able to roll the initiative out to other members of their team and eventually to their sister offices in other regions.
