Heatwave advice from Public Health England

It's hot!  Temperatures are forecast to hit 29 degrees Celcius in Aylesbury Vale and Princes Risborough this week during a national heatwave.

Hopefully you're able to enjoy the heat, but it's important to stay healthy during perods of hot weather.  This is particularly true for vulnerable adults, older people and their carers (whether professional home carers or family and friends).

Fortunately Public Health England, the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England provide some top tips for staying cool in their Heatwave Plan for England.

These include:

  • Shade or cover windows exposed to direct sunlight
  • If safe, open windows when it's cooler outside, for example at night.  Try to get air flowing through your home
  • Turn off any electrical equipment not in use
  • Check the heating's off!
  • Growing plants inside will help to cool the air
  • As ever, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Check your medicines for recommended storage temperatures, you may need to store them somewhere cooler

There are some beautiful places to visit in Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns; be aware it may be cooler outside in the shade than it is at home.

And handy checklist and further information including where to get help can be found here.
