With spring beginning to show it’s true colours with yellow daffodils, purple crocuses and the occasionally blue sky - it’s time to get in the garden and enjoy the many healthy benefits that come alongside it!

Gardening is known to enhance well-being as well as reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, not to forget that it provides social entertainment for those that enjoy gardening in groups or with friends. You can grow pretty flowers and tasty fruit and veggies, all whilst in the comfort of your own back garden – so what’s not to love?

Gardening for older people is a great way to keep fit and in better general health. Here are just some of the many benefits to gardening:
  • Enjoyable exercise
  • Strengthens bones, muscles and joints
  • Improves balance
  • Reduces blood pressure and the risk of heart disease and strokes
  • Maintains mobility and flexibility
  • Reduces stress and promotes relaxation
  • Provides simulation and interest in nature
  • Provides natural, home-grown produce
If you find that regular tools are becoming difficult for you to use, try looking online or in a gardening centre for elderly adapted tools which make grasping and lifting much easier. Whether you want to decorate the garden or create stunning plant pot displays or herb, veg and fruit gardens, there’s plenty to do for all abilities.

With the weather slowly warming up, there’s more chance for a nice day to get out in the garden. Just don’t forget a hat, suncream, gardening gloves and a refreshing drink!
